A two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Route 32 in the Town of Woodbury is under investigation by state police.
The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m., Friday, when a Toyota Celica, with two male occupants, was traveling north on Route 32 in the area of Ridge Road crossed into the southbound lane and was struck head-on by a Kenworth fuel tanker carrying approximately 8,500 gallons of gasoline, said New York State Police.
The passenger of the Toyota was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Orange County Medical Examiner, state police said.
The driver of the Toyota was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center with lower body and internal injuries. The driver of the fuel tanker suffered only minor injuries. The names of persons involved are being withheld pending family notification.
As a result of the accident, more than 50 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled on the roadway. Orange County Hazmat responded to the scene for spill clean-up. None of the gasoline in the tanker was spilled. This section of State Route 32 was closed for spill clean-up and to allow for the transfer of the 8,500 gallons of gasoline into a new fuel tanker prior to being removed from the scene, state police said.
Investigators were assisted at the scene by the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Town of Woodbury Police Department.
The investigation remains ongoing.
