A straw poll of New York state Republicans favors Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro over state Sen. John DeFrancisco of Syracuse as their preferred candidate for governor.

Meanwhile, the Empire Report, in this story, quotes sources close to Molinaro saying he popular 42-year-old politician is definitely running against Gov. Andrew Cuomo this year.

David Catalfamo, a spokesman for Molinaro, said: “Marc is deeply grateful and humbled by the support, there will be no formal announcement today.”

At the request of Republican Party leaders from around the state, Molinaro went  to Saratoga to address the collective state GOP delegates.

He subsequently won a straw poll with 55 votes to 23 for DeFrancisco and five for Joe Holland.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, who lost a challenge to Gov. Mario Cuomo four years ago, ruled out a repeat run after losing to George Latimer in the fall.

Molinaro, 42, told the Poughkeepsie Journal on Wednesday in this article, that he may run.

Dutchess County's executive since 2012, Molinaro previously served five years in the state Assembly. He also served as the mayor of Tivoli.

Cuomo of New Castle, meanwhile, is being mentioned by some as a possible Democratic challenger to President Trump in 2020 in what is a crowded field of possible contenders, led by former Vice President Joe Biden.
